Tracking PR Thoughts

Well, it's not that easy to find the good place to stay at in this permanently fast moving Web 2.0 environment...;o) I am now based on Webjam, probably for the next year at least...;o)

My new blog as of the 13th december 06 is here.

Experimenting SquareSpace

Following a discussion I had with Philippe at the IAOC conference, he convinced me to give a try to SquareSpace. I've set up a new blog there and I am going to give it a try.

I have to say that I am so used to Typepad that it's not so easy to find my way in any other weblogging solution, but I made my decision to change and I now have to find the one I feel more comfortable with. I will definitely also consider WordPress, following Neville's exemple and successful move since few months already, so if you have any feeling you'd like to share on one or the other of those both, please jump in the comments.

Map your blog's network

An amazing way to graph your connections, although no information is available on the nature of each link, still a nice visual effects. Get your own graph here.

Another tool available is TouchGraph, providing much more information on your network as it shows who is each contact and their own network of connection:

In the same spirit, you should also have a look on Swarm:

Swarm is a graphical map of hundreds of websites, all connecting to each other. It updates itself every second with where people are going and coming from. As sites become more popular, they move towards the center of the swarm and grow larger. Conversely, sites that lose traffic move away from the center and grow smaller.

As soon as you use Firefox and download Swarm extension, you share the information regarding the websites you are visiting with other users and so does every member of the community. The most popular web sites will be the closer to the center of the map. Definitely worth having a look !

Supporting PR students

Mark Phillimore sent me a list of questions he prepared with his students from the London Metropolitan University and asked me whether I could answer them through a podcast, what we did together thursday evening, and also blog the list here to give a chance to his students to get other point of views...
I won't share the podcast here as unfortunately it was one of my worth (on the technical point of view, I also lost 3 minutes of it, it has been a real mess....) so I decided to moderate this blog...;o)
Regarding the list of questions, I copy paste them below, if you could give few minutes of your time to grab some of them and leave your thoughts in the comments or on your blog and trackback here to let us know, this will be great for Mark's students.

Questions:

1. What do you think of Google’s use of its corporate blog to announce the recent
court case settlement. This caused a great deal of fuss from the investing
community. Was this due to Google perhaps misunderstanding role of blogging
and failing to consider more formal communication routes for certain
announcements (such as online press office) or do you think it was deliberate to
highlight growing role of blogging ?
2. How important is new digital media technology for the PR industry?
3. Have you come across the Vocus system which was demonstrated to us. The
CEO said PR companies have been slow to invest in IT infrastructure, what do
you think?
4. How long did it take you to develop the “right” style for your blog?
5. Losing control in the social computing model seems a concern to business, what
is your view? How are you able to reassure company’s or organizations on this
issue?
6. Today we have been looking at company web sites and many have used very
traditional communication models. Which sites would you suggest highlight or
are starting to explore more advanced social computing models?
7. Do you think podcasting may become more influential than text blogs?
8. We noticed that many blogs actually have very few comments from readers.
Does this highlight the limits of blogging as an interactive medium or that
“information grazing” is a key participation process in blogging as opposed to
actual interaction?
9. Do you distinguish between forums/chat rooms and blogging? Do you know of
companies using forums in an active dialogue?
10. How much time do you spend blogging each day?
11. Tell us about some of the projects you are working on and the communication
issues this is tackling?
12. Which new media technology, do you consider, is one to watch and is going to
become influential and powerful over the next few years for the PR community ?

A new french PR blog entered the blogosphere yesterday, PRojetZ, authored by Philippe Cherel.

Launch of Netizen, first french magazine on blogging

netizen_01_medium
We now have in France the first magazine (traditional paper edition, not online one) on blogs, wikis, citizen journalism and podcasting: Netizen. It's a monthly, the first issue is this month one, and it seems to me, a very ambitious challenge. Is an offline magazine about the online world going to be able to keep attention from a world which is moving quite in real time...?

The first edition has a focus on blogs and politics, good number one, congrats and all the best for nexts issues !

Social Radio

I was looking for a social radio application and I think I found it. I found Last FM on a blog recently and I believe this might be THE one I needed.
This free service allows you to create a personal radio station hosted on your blog, you can share play lists, but also play your favorite songs.

Image 1

I also heard about Radio Blogs few month ago but it has some technical requirements I've not been able to answer as user of a hosting weblog solutions.
I am definitely going to test Last FM on this blog and will let you know my first thoughts. Hope it will be as easy to use and set up as it seems to be...

Back !

Well, I've been out for more than one week, some fresh air and distance to make good decision and plans for 2006 ! This is, I am now "quite" ready for this new year !

The main decision is that PR Thoughts is going to be and remain exclusively my personal blog (well, it was already the case, yes, but also a bit professional, a kind of mix...not always easy to manage...) engaging my personal views, opinions and positions where I will talk mainly about IT, Internet topics that I really fancy (yes, I am a geek at some point...) but not really about PR. Ok, now I am going to face an issue with the title of my blog, "PR Thoughts" should be talking at some point about PR, but well, I don't have all the answers now.

Second point is that I am going to continue my podcast on new communications as this is my daily job in my business life. This is going to be a weekly meeting on blogs, wikis, podcasting, RSS and exciting practices around the world... I don't know yet where it will be available, the last shows are available here at PR Thoughts, the podcasting section is hosted on the left vertical menu and the subscription feed is this one.My last guest was Hugh Davies, Head of Communications at Microsoft UK, I hope to publish it in the very next days. As soon as this new podcast is ready, I'll let you know.

So things will be clearly separate, personal on one side and professional on the other (I hope it won't mean smart on one side and boring on the other...), and "probably" both will remain in english.

Conclusion is: I am still blogger and podcaster, but depending of your center of interest, you might have to update your blogroll ! ;o)

All the best for 2006 !!! ;o)

265 attendees at "Les Blogs 2.0"

The organisation of Les Blogs 2.0 that I am coproducing with Six Apart and Elizabeth Albrycht is going quite well while at the same time consuming a lot of time ... We are very happy to see that we now have 265 attendees so this is really going to be a great event thanks to this world wide participation. Getting all your inputs is going to be fascinating ! US, Europe, Asia, Africa, we'll all be there...

My nightmare of these days is the Wifi... We were supposed to get a sponsor, one of the main wifi constructors ( you know, companies like, D-Link, Netgear, Linksys) but unfortunately, last time change, this is not going to happen... Bad news... So, Loïc got a suggestion to contact The Cloud, what I did this morning, I hope they will get back with a positive answer... As you all know, we NEED a wifi hotspot in the center of the room, we'll be more than 300 bloggers, so you can easily imagine our need of a professional solution. By the way, would you have any recomendation, please leave me a comment !

So yes, I am sorry for the lack of posts those days, my arrival at Edelman and Les Blogs 2.0 in less than 3 weeks are 2 good reasons to be quite busy, but what a great job ! ;o)

Looking forward to meeting you on the 5&6 december !

CEOs find blogs usefull

Quick post following an article from CNET News:

A growing number of American chief executives rate blogs high as employee communication tools, though a majority of them remain skeptical about starting their own, a new study shows.

This is also about employee blogging:

Many companies encourage employees to share new ideas in their blogs and get feedback from customers or users of their services.

Do you know blooks ?

A blook is a printed and bound book, based on a blog.

Most famous ones are from 'Salam Pax: The Clandestine Diary of an Ordinary Iraqi' (Grove Press), the eye-witness accounts of the Iraq war by the blogger known as Salam Pax, 'Small Pieces Loosely Joined' (Perseus Books), Dan Gillmor's "We The Media" (O'Reilly), David Weinberger's spiritual interpretation of the Internet, actor Wil Wheaton's memoir 'Just a Geek' (O'Reilly), and Jessica Cutler's 'The Washingtonienne' (Hyperion), a novel based on her scandalous blog of the same name. More scandalous still is 'Belle de Jour: The Intimate Adventures Of A London Call Girl, by Anon' (Phoenix), which started life as an infamous blog, describing the life of a north London prostitute, and read by 15,000 a day.

Image 4

It seems like more than 100 blooks have been published till now, there is now also "The Blooker Prize" that has been launched on the 10th of October 2005, the world's first literary prize for blooks, organized by Lulu, a website that enables anyone to publish and sell their own book. (well, yes, that's linked...)

The prize will reward blooks in three categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction and Comic-Blooks, it is open to blooks published anywhere by anyone, provided they are in English (Loïc, you should translate your blook in english to compete against Scoble's and Shell's one !)

Judges will be: Cory Doctorow, co-editor of BoingBoing, Robin Miller, editor-in-chief of Slashdot and Paul Jones, director of iBiblio.

The Lulu Blooker Prize will take place annually. The short list of books for the inaugural prize will be announced in March 2006 and the winner on 3 April, 2006.

Know what, there is an additional step: Flooks ! Film based on blooks ! ;o)

Reporters Without Borders publishes a Handbook for Bloggers and Cyber-Dissidents

bandeau-guide-blogger-en

Blogs get people excited. Or else they disturb and worry them. Some people distrust them. Others see them as the vanguard of a new information revolution. Because they allow and encourage ordinary people to speak up, they’re tremendous tools of freedom of expression.

This campaign has been launched by Reporters Without Borders to help bloggers beat censors in countries from China to Iran. Bloggers from around the world have been involved, including famous Dan Gillmor.

Nokia Lifeblog, Typepad and a Nokia 6680

Done ! I now have the full material for an easy and efficient new moblogging life ! I've been waiting for months to make a decision and choose the good camera phone including Nokia Lifeblog (or is it just a plugin...) and here I am, finally...

Unfortunately it never rolls the first time easily as soon as you need to have more than 2 players in the game...

Image 3

I downloaded the last version of Nokia Lifeblog and thanks to Nokia PC Suite (yes, I still have a PC at home for software that don't exist in Mac version...) I've been able to transfer Lifeblog on my new Nokia 6680.

Image 2

All these first steps have been working well, also the set up of the Lifeblog account directly on the camera phone, nothing specific to underline.

The main issue poped up as soon as I wanted to connect and download the list of my blogs and moblog my first post... At this stage I've been falling in the deepest mystery of SFR, french mobile operator... Although I was able to surf on internet with my mobile (yes Loïc I confirm it was working, thanks again for the hotline), impossible to access to my typepad accounts...

Image 4

Hopefully I made some additional tests and I found that the configuration of the internet connection was not the same depending if you wanted to surf on the web or get emails or reach your typepad account with Lifeblog...?!? Ok, I am not a geek, but rather IT friendly, and I have to say this could have been made simpler...

So the solution is, for those who are using SFR + Nokia 6680 + Lifeblog: in the configuration menu of your 6680, lifeblog>options>paramètres>param weblog>"your account name">param compte>point d'accès internet> (sorry, such a long path..) you have to choose "mail " as the way to connect to internet , even if your browser says you are using "vodafone live".... Don't ask me why...
But it works ! Sigh...

A question still remains: how to import a photo that you take with the camera phone in lifeblog ??? No idea how to do it... Not ending story... All pictures are going in the library, not in Lifeblog and I didn't found any way to get the new pictures I took there... Any idea ? Update following morning...: in fact, as soon as you have at least one photo that you took with the camera phone, it becomes automatically available in Lifeblogs directory.... Don't know why it didn't work yesterday although I had some that I took, but it's working now, I just made another test.

Interview of Mena Trott by CNN

I missed this interview of Mena Trott by CNN, President and cofounder of Six Apart. One of the questions I noticed, Mena's vision of the Internet in the 10 next years:

CNN:
How much will the Internet change over the next 10 years?
TROTT: I think that blogging is going more and more mainstream, and in 10 years I doubt it will be called "blogging." It may not even look like what we're doing today. But the whole idea [of being] able to quickly express what you want to say online is going to be still a big part of what we do.
Another big part is going to be mobile computing and devices. I use my cell phone right now to post to my Web log. I post something every day to that one with pictures of me. It's mindless, it's just something I can do really quickly and it doesn't interfere with my life at all. ...
Being able to record your life is something that I can imagine everyone [doing]. [Everyone will] have terabyte after terabyte of all these instances of their lives. And certain information is going to be available to certain groups and other will be available only to like family and other stuff will be available only to you. So in 10 years, I can fully imagine every moment of my life is documented. And the privacy will be there to prevent it from being used in a malicious way. But that I think is the biggest thing. We're going into a recording of life.
Thanks
Debbie for the link !

The next generation of PR folks will be blogging ...

Robert French, a terrific innovative teacher at Auburn University where he is teaching PR, begins this semester with a new initiative: he is launching a community of PR bloggers at PRblogs.org, nothing less than that !

PRblogs.org offers free blogs to PR practitioners, educators and students with the purpose to be prepared to deal with them, use them, in professional life.

What better way than to use blogs on a daily basis to feel used to these new communication tools. More than that, Robert has invited some PR pros to join the community and participate during the semester in ongoing discussion and to provide thoughts, inputs, links, in other words, to share their knowledge with his students.

When I see this kind of great initiatives, I wonder how traditional PR can't be dead... The next generation of PR folks is going to be terrific ...

Hill & Knowlton launched it's blogging community

hklogo_red2

I just learned (thanks Stanislas) the launch of Collective Conversation, H&K's professional blogging community, and I have to say I am glad to see their arrival in the blogosphere !

Image 3

It seems like there are now two bloggers there, the portal has been launched recently, middle of june but the official announcement to the employee around the world has been made today.

The first two bloggers are:
Niall Cook, blogging at "Marketing Technology" on marketing technologies and blogging communities (hey, you'll have a new reader Niall !),
Chris Colby, blogging at "Netcoms" on Insight and expertise in networked communications (damned, second new blog to subscribe to...).

I'll be curious to see how fast this community is growing... The adventure begins with a quizz to see if employees are ready to blog, I did the test, although the first question was really not easy to answer, I've been hired as "BlogStar" ! ;o) Sorry guys, the star won't be able to blog at your side, I am not filling the first condition: "be an employee of a wholly-owned Hill & Knowlton office"... ;o)

The blogging policy is available, you can also find there the additional recomandations to the young bloggers.

So come on guys, let us see what you have to say ! Welcome again !

PS: will we see Paul Taaffee following Richard Edelman's path ? ;o) I hope so !

PR Thoughts' first birthday !

Today is my blog's first birthday ! I've been spending already one full year at PR Thoughts sharing views, ideas or question with you. How fast it went...

I have to say I could never imagined I would have made so many connections with others bloggers thanks to this blog, I met more people in one year as PR blogger than in the last 4 previous one as "traditionnals" PR, I learned faster than I ever did, I discovered things I could never suspect, and my business life has been really strongly impacted, in a very positive way.

I am more than happy to begin this second year here, I assume there would be some majors changes to share with you also, but life is going to be less serious, smarter, so I hope to meet you here again soon.

Tomorrow I'll be flying to Frankfurt as I am going to participate in Wikimania, so stay tuned, I'll post about this first international event for the "wikisphere" ! ;o)

It seems like Ketchum is blogging since the begining of June. I wrote "It seems like" because when you see what they pretend to be a blog, then you wonder how they dare humiliating PR bloggers like this...

They don't understand anything in blogging, no comment, no trackback, no RSS feed, nothing else but a catalogue of old topics already discussed hundred of times around the blogosphere...
Don't even expect to see there any human voice, it's a collection of one page - one idea white papers...
Last but no the least, drop them an email to suggest what they should blog about, you'll perhaps win an iPod... Surprising they've called their "blog" ketchum ideas if the ideas are coming from elsewhere...

Speaking at Collaboration in the eWorkplace in Paris

I am actually participating as speaker at Collaboration in the e-Workplace, a 2 days semininar organized by Information Today in Paris where I've been invited by Jane McConnell. Jane asked me to do a blog conference focused on corporate blogging case studies and one on Wikis at a very basics level.

Attendees are coming from several european countries, from both corporate and institutional world, so do speakers: Pierre Brenas from Suez (France), Joseph Cothrel from BTC (US), Darlene Fichter(Canada), Christian Lindholm "godfather of mobile phone users" from Nokia (Finland) and Jane of course.

We were not supposed to have any Internet connection but finally we did, so I've been able to make few jump at GM Fastlane Blog, GM Small Block Engine at the very beginning, but couldn't go on several others as I wasn't familiar with the laptop available, more over my speaking time slot was of 45 minutes which is quite short for such a wide topic. Below are the other blogs and posts I've been making reference to: Shel Israel's interview of Bob Lutz and Neville's one of Michael Wiley, Randy's Journal,Siemens SK65 blog, Nokia 7710 blog Treonauts, EMC Dantz, La Fraise, Rue Souveraine, Le blog auto, Roland's post about IBM and Microsoft increasing their presence in the blogosphere, Skype blog.

I was particularly interested to see Darlene's speech on blogs and how she introduce blog from her academic + canadian point of view, I have to say she made it great !

Skype launched it's blog !

Good news: Skype has launched a blog "Share.Skype.com", another famous brand coming in the blogosphere, I hope they'll be playing the game well and give us another successful example of the benefits of corporate blogs.

See Neville's post.

Grokker : A new way to look at search

Logo Tag

Do you know Grokker ? A completely new way to search for information on the web and to organize the results of your search. Rather than getting a list of hundreds of links, you get a single map presenting the results per topic. Based on Yahoo ! Search engine, this is really a fantastic innovation tool !

See what Sun Microsystems thinks about it and have a look below on my PR Thoughts' Grokker map.

Grok

See what R.J. Pittman, CEO and founder of Grokker says about it on his blog:
"The idea behind Grokker is to put the control over search and search results into the hands of the user. Most search engines rely upon algorithms – a repetitive mathematically-based set of processes – to determine which results to return and the order in which they will appear. It’s no secret that savvy site operators manipulate those algorithms to increase the likelihood of their pages being returned more often. Because of this, search results sometimes appear to be only remotely related to the query. The upshot is that there is currently a lot of discussion around the “objectivity” of search engine algorithms. (And many interesting side discussions about the notion of an inanimate, mathematic concept’s ability to be objective.)

With Grokker, the order in which results are presented is moot because results are organized by topic and presented within categories and related subcategories. The algorithm is no longer relevant, and so search results become more honest, more objective if you will."

Thanks Eric for the link !

It seems like Nooked also launched it's Partner programmes. Fergus, you've done a huge work !

Ecto for Mac is just unbelievable ...

I was few minutes ago on a Skype chat with Loïc and he just recomend me to use Ecto as I told him I was now the happy owner of an iBook, so I've been downloading it just now and I must say this is just unbelievable... The 2.3.1 release definitely has terrific features, so a full review becomes a must do for me...

So much more about it soon here.

End of "Les Blogs"

That's it, the conference on "Blogs and social software" is now behind us, this has been a very interesting and intensive day, a fantastic opportunity to meet many bloggers and to share thoughts, ideas...

As I was working to organize interviews with the press to cover the event, I haven't had unfortunateley the opportunity to attend all the conferences. I am more than happy I've had the opportunity to organize TV interviews for Doc Searls, Joi Ito, Hossein Derakhsan and Loïc Le Meur of course, as he was the organisator of the event.

There are more than 1035 photos about the event on Flickr at the moment I write this post, so if you wan't to have a look, you'll have a lot to see there....Photo20

So many things to say, so I'll come back soon with some more thoughts about what happened there.

Congratulations Loïc, you made a great day and a "first time" in Europe !
